Privacy policy
Last updated 7 October 2026, for ChatGPT
Spine collects no data for its developer. It has no servers, no analytics and no tracking. When you agree to have articles read, Spine sends the text of the articles you open to the reader you chose: ChatGPT, your own Claude Code or Codex, or Anthropic’s API with your key.
What Spine sends, and where
When you open Spine on a page, and you have agreed to have articles read, Spine sends:
- the article’s title, author, site name and language
- the article’s text, split into numbered sentences, with its headings, list items and image captions
It sends them to one of these, whichever you chose in Spine’s settings:
- OpenAI’s API at api.openai.com, under your ChatGPT plan, with the sign-in you gave Spine, under OpenAI’s terms of use and privacy policy
- Claude Code on your computer, which sends them to Anthropic under your Claude plan and Anthropic’s consumer terms and privacy policy
- Codex on your computer, which sends them to OpenAI under your ChatGPT plan and OpenAI’s terms of use and privacy policy
- Anthropic’s API at api.anthropic.com, with your API key, under Anthropic’s commercial terms and privacy policy
To reach Claude Code or Codex, Spine uses a small connector program you install yourself. Your browser starts it only when Spine asks for a reading; it hands the article to your own Claude Code or Codex, returns the reply and exits. It keeps nothing, and it never reads your Claude or ChatGPT sign-in.
To read with ChatGPT, you sign in to OpenAI in a small window and allow Spine to use your plan. OpenAI then sends that window back to an address on your own computer, 127.0.0.1, which Spine watches for so it can finish signing in; nothing is sent there. Spine keeps the sign-in in its own storage in your browser, which websites can’t read, and sends it only to OpenAI.
With ChatGPT or the API, Spine sends the article straight from your browser to OpenAI or Anthropic. It does not pass through any server run by Spine’s developer.
Spine sends each article once. It saves the notes in your browser, so opening the article again sends nothing.
If you change Spine’s API address in its settings, Spine sends API requests to that address instead.
What Spine keeps in your browser
- your Anthropic API key, in Spine’s extension storage on this device
- your ChatGPT sign-in, if you read with ChatGPT: your account’s name and email address and the tokens OpenAI issued to Spine, in Spine’s own storage on this device
- the notes written for the last 400 articles you read, and your place in each
- which reader you chose, whether you agreed to have articles read, and when
- your settings, such as theme and text size, which your browser may sync to your other devices if you use its sync
None of this leaves your browser, apart from your settings through your browser’s sync, your key sent to Anthropic and your ChatGPT sign-in sent to OpenAI, as described above.
Other things Spine does when you ask
- Images and site icons load from the article’s own website, as they would if you read the page normally.
- The copy actions put text on your clipboard.
- Save to Obsidian passes a note to the Obsidian app on your device.
What Spine never does
- sell or share your data
- use your data for advertising, analytics or to decide creditworthiness
- read pages you have not opened Spine on
Spine’s use of the information it handles follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Stop or delete
- To stop sending articles, turn off “Send the articles I open to be read” in Spine’s settings.
- To stop reading with ChatGPT, select Sign out in Spine’s settings, or disconnect Spine in your ChatGPT settings.
- To remove the connector for Claude Code and Codex, run its installer again with
--uninstall. - To delete saved notes and reading places, select Clear saved notes in Spine’s settings.
- To delete everything Spine keeps, remove Spine from your browser.
Anthropic and OpenAI keep what they receive according to their own policies.
Changes to this policy
If Spine ever changes what it sends or where, it will tell you in the extension and ask again before sending anything.
